How to Clean a DE Pool Filter

How to Clean a DE Pool Filter

A DE filter is one of the best at cleaning pools, but it needs to be cleaned just like any other pool filter.

When the pressure gauge has reached eight to ten PSI above where it should be, then you will need to clean your filter.

Because of the nature of DE filters, you will need to clean them roughly every 30 days depending on their use.

3 Steps to Cleaning Your DE Filter

To properly clean a DE filter, you will need to do three things:

  • Backwash
  • Clean Grids and Manifolds
  • Add New DE (diatomaceous earth)

Backwashing Your DE Filter

Backwashing means that you clean out all the debris that is inside the debris filter.

Simply turn the pool filter valve to the backwash position and start up the pool pump.

Once the discharge looks clear, shut down the pump and return the valve to its correct position.

Rinse off the Grids and Manifolds

After that, open the air relief valve, remove the drain plug, and drain the tank.

Once done, unlock the DE filter by releasing the clamp or bolts depending on the model.

Use a garden hose to rinse off the grids and manifolds along with the rest of the tank.

Once they are clean, you will need to lubricate the O-ring or gasket on the inside of the tank.

Add DE to the Filter

You are now ready to add DE into the filter again.

Prime the pump, removing the lid to the straining basket, and fill the basket with water.

Once that is completed, release any excess air from the tank via the air relief valve and turn on the pump.

The pump must be running before you can add in the DE.

Depending on the size of the filter, you will need to add in a specific amount of DE.

The mixture of DE and water will create a cream-like substance that can be poured directly into the pool skimmer.

This will draw the DE to the filter where it will distribute evenly along the grids.

This will complete the cleaning process. All you need to do now is run the pump for about 30 minutes and then turn it off.

Pros and Cons of Owning a DE Filter

There are several types of pool filtration systems out there with the DE being one of the more popular ones.

Cleaning the DE filter and tank is quite easy and relatively fast compared to other filters which may take far longer to accomplish.

However, the downside is that you do need to clean it regularly and frequently when in use – usually once per month.
